Ken Harvey
Associate Pastor

Contact Ken via email

Ken is a man who is passionate about three things: God, family and sports. Ken grew up in Florence, OR and graduated with a BA in education from Puget Sound Christian College in 1978.  Ken has been on staff at Canby Christian Church since 1978 and has served as Senior Pastor, Christian Education Pastor, Youth Pastor and is currently serving as an Associate Pastor.

In his lifetime, Ken has been a dedicated and faithful servant to God and has used his leadership skills in many ways.  He has directed over 25 youth camps and has lead over 20 missions trips to various places.  For Ken, there is no complicated answer as to why his life has been ministry focused. "I love people, and I want them to know Jesus."  Ken has a deep love for his wife Chris, his seven children, and a growing number of grandchildren.

Non-pertinent and "just for the fun of it" information:
If you ever want to butter Ken up, you should make note that he is a sucker for Blazers tickets and Chocolate Raspberry Truffle Ice Cream.  He's also a self-professed master of grilling the world's tastiest baby back ribs, and
loves to dine out at Red Lobster any chance he can.  Ken's main hobby is his love for sports. He's a season ticket holder for Oregon Ducks football, plays basketball multiple times a week, and is an above average ping pong player.  He's a man who loves to laugh and if he can throw a pun into a conversation, it's a safe bet he will.  If asked for some solid wisdom, Ken's go-to quote is "There are three kinds of people, those who can count and those who can't."  His favorite movie is Rocky 3, and he often quotes Clubber Lang by saying, "Your prediction for this fight, Pain!".  His favorite verse in the bible is Phillipians 4:4-9.

Neal Thorne

NextGen Pastor

Contact Neal Via Email

Neal has lived in the Northwest his entire life and loves everything about it.  Neal began his ministry at Canby Christian Church in January of 2007, and served as the Youth Pastor until 2015 when he began his role as the NextGen Pastor.   Originally Neal is from Pasco, WA, but offically considers himself an Oregonian now.

Neal graduated from Puget Sound Christian College in 2005 with a BA in Christian Ministry and immediately started working in ministry.  As NextGen Pastor, Neal is responsible for how our church ministers to the next generation of Christians, our kids and youth! While he is responsible for the ministry of our youth, he also provides direct oversight and guidance to our team of staff members who faithfully serve in our Pre-K and CCkids ministries.  In his spare time, you may also find Neal providing technical solutions throughout our church.

Neal married Emily Thorne in 2006, and they have three children. Neal enjoys sports and sunshine, and loves anything that involves competition.  Neal loves to work hard and knows how to play hard. A perfect day in Neal's life would involve his family, outside in the sun, possibly riding quads with his children or working on projects around the house.  While a man after God's heart, don't be fooled.. he is all boy. He loves his Jesus, his wife, and his family.

Neal's favorite verse is Galatians 2:20.
For I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in my body, I live by faith in the son of God who loved me and gave himself up for me.

Content for the silly minded:
If you found yourself across a dinner table somewhere with Neal, you'd inevitably find him eating something with a lot of MEAT.  His favorite movie of all time is Top Gun, and he says "the intro music gives me chills!"  While they married in 2006, Neal and Emily met initially on a missions trip in 1999.  Most people wouldn't know this about Neal, but he and his wife love to play games such as Settlers of Catan, Cribbage, and Pinochle.  He may be a bit competitive....

Jeff Joyner
Worship & Arts Pastor

Contact Jeff Via Email

Jeff Joyner (JJ) joined the Canby Christian Church staff in December of 2011.  He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas worship and arts and has a unique talent for drawing people to the throne of God in worship. He also has years of experience in discipleship and leadership.

JJ spent his first eight years of ministry with Keynote Communications, which is the music ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU). There he traveled with different contemporary groups and bands and also served as a writer, producer and worship leader.  After 8 years, JJ transitioned out of CRU into church ministry, where he served as a Worship Pastor in the Southern California, Atlanta, and Seattle areas before coming to Canby Christian.

JJ is passionate about leading people into the presence of God through worship, drama and the arts. He also loves people and enjoys the areas of Shepherding and Pastoral Care.  He and his wife Sherry both love working with college-aged students and singles. He finds a deep connection with God anytime he’s leading worship at his piano, and is gifted at taking others with him in his worship journey as he leads in music.

If you happen to drop by for a visit on a Saturday afternoon, you would most likely find JJ out for a run, watching Sports Center, or out to dinner at some massive buffet with his wife and boys. Relaxation is only a few hours away, as JJ and Sherry love spending time at the beach.  He is an avid sports fan, and loves the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners and Portland Trailblazers. If given the choice of restaurant, JJ would typically choose a hole-in-the-wall joint with excellent food over a fancy restaurant.

Kayla MastKayla Circle
CCKIDS Coordinator, Office Assistant

Contact Kayla Via Email

Kayla Mast grew up in Hubbard, Oregon. After attending Hesston College in Kansas and Bible College in British Columbia, Canada, Kayla received a wide variety of experiences in children’s ministry including teaching Sunday school, directing VBS, and leading a young adult group. She worked at Drift Creek Camp as a counselor for two years, and then as a summer program director for an additional two years. Being a Bible Study Fellowship leader for the a past two years has equipped her in leadership and prepared her for instruction in the Word of God.

One of Kayla’s greatest passions is discipleship, and she believes it’s the key to building relationships. She has a strong desire to see the connections in God’s Word and how it applies to her life today and in the lives of the people at the time it was written. As an avid student of the Bible, Kayla loves to see the church move as God’s people study His Word and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Family life and sports are a big part of Kayla’s life, so don’t be surprised when you find board games, her baseball mitt, running shoes, and a volleyball permanently stowed away in her trunk—she’s ready to play at a moment’s notice. If she’s not out hiking with her family or friends, you might find her catching up with the latest episode of When Calls the Heart—a show with a lead character who comes from the big city and knows absolutely nothing about country life—but Kayla could teach her a thing or two! She would be the best person to teach her how to survive the big woods, use a slingshot, and no she wouldn’t miss that squirrel if her life depended on it!

No matter the adventure, at the end of the day, Kayla’s first love remains true—to learn and grow with others through experience and fellowship in Christ. In her efforts, Kayla stays motivated with a verse she holds dear to her heart: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 NIV

Brett circleBrett Harvey
Nursery/Pre-School Coordinator

Contact Brett Via Email

Brett Harvey has been attending Canby Christian Church his whole life. His dad Ken, CCC’s Associate Pastor, and his mom, Chris Harvey, started attending CCC when his dad became the Youth Pastor in 1979. In June 2012, Brett took on the position of the Preschool Coordinator, which entails overseeing the nursery, 2s & 3s and 4s & 5s.

Brett attended Puget Sound Christian College and Hope International University and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Since graduating, he has worked at Bon Appetit Management Company and is now working at George Fox University. Brett’s background has created the perfect combo for his work here at CCC. With his Christian education and his skills as a caterer, Brett has blessed us with his many talents. Aside from being an amazing Preschool Coordinator, he has also assisted in our Charlie Brown Festival where his hot chocolate bar was a huge hit!

One of the greatest rewards Brett has received as the Preschool Coordinator is seeing the kids grow from the nursery up through the time they start memorizing their verses in the 4s and 5s room. If you’ve ever wondered how Brett remains calm no matter what age group he’s working with, it may come from spending time outdoors in the quiet of his garden or doing yard work. And, of course, no Preschool Coordinator should ever be without a good workout plan. Brett enjoys running, which is a good thing, as there are many little tikes who can make great strides—and Brett does just fine keeping up with them.

Someday Brett would like to travel through Europe and visit London, France and Germany—but until then, he remains faithful to the work the Lord has called him to do today. By preparing lesson plans, crafts and activities, decorating the rooms by making them fun and exciting, Brett is the behind-the-scenes guy that makes Sunday morning a snap for teachers to teach and a blast for the kids to learn.

Melody CircleMelody Roberts
Office Manager

Contact Melody Via Email

Melody has lived in Oregon for the past twenty-one years, but her Hoosier roots still reveal themselves in many ways—most obviously in her writing. She enjoys crafting novels about Indiana, which keeps her connected to her home state. In addition to story writing, Melody expresses her faith, either in a devotion or prose style, in her monthly blog.

Besides writing, Melody also loves reading good books—especially historical. Among her favorite authors are Julie Klassen, Sarah Ladd, Lynn Austin, and Melanie Dickerson.

For Melody, friendships in the church are like no other friendships. At Canby Christian church, she appreciates the fellowship she shares with other believers and sees the way God works through His people. As a 4’s and 5’s Sunday school teacher, she knows age is no barrier for God’s message. In fact, many times she’s found herself to be the student to some very wise young people.

Different verses have spoken to her over the years, but Philippians 4:6-7 is one that brings her great comfort:
“. . . do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Something else about Melody:
She loves light-hearted romantic comedies, but one of her favorites will always be You’ve Got Mail—not so much for the storyline and fabulous music—but for the fond memory she has of her son at nine months old mimicking Tom Hanks’ character because she’d played the movie so many times!

Renee circleRenee McClaugherty
Communications and Hospitality Coordinator

Contact Renee Via Email

While we typically picture our staff by themselves, it seemed only fitting to include Renee's sponsored child in Uganda, as that is where Renee's heart beats.
Renee has worked at Canby Christian Church since 2000, and is known on staff as the "glue that holds everything together".  Renee currently holds two important roles on staff. As the office administrator, she works hard to effectively communicate with the church congregation regarding the events and details of our various ministries.  This includes overseeing the church website, database, and weekly bulletins (among a long list of other things).  As our First Impressions Coordinator, Renee is constantly on the lookout to create a great first impression at our church.  This includes overseeing welcome teams, Greeters, Security, event booths, visitor center, and visitor follow up.

Renee and her husband Steve are originally from Del Mar, California, and have a long history of serving in Christian Camping Ministry with Forest Home Christian Conference Center and Canby Grove.  Renee has served in the local church in many different ways over the years, from being a dedicated teacher of children and teens, to being a leader on various missions trips.  She is very passionate about her current role as Office Administrator as she enjoys "keeping the office running efficiently while being available to minister to people".

Need a favor from Renee? Well here is the secret recipe:
Renee smiles her brightest when her grandchildren show up for a visit at the church office.  She really loves being a grandma.  Renee has been married to her husband Steve since 1973, and loves to spend time with him riding their bikes through town on warm summer days.  Renee says she could never turn away from a view of a beautiful sunset, spending time at the beach, or reading a good book. In fact, some of her favorite authors include Bodie Thoene, Joel Rosenberg, Randy Alcorn and CS Lewis.  She loves coffee, a hug from a child, and will ALWAYS take help in the office.

Renee's favorite verse in the bible is Jeremiah 29:11-13, which says:
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."
