Text Focused Conversation Starter: 

The Gospel According to John opens with a very famous prologue that serves as an introduction to this account of Christ in beautiful poetic language. History is filled with amazing introductory phrases like, “Once upon a time” Or “Long ago in a galaxy far far away.” 

  • What is your favorite opening to a story, movie, or book? And why is it special to you?

  • In a few words, what kinds of feelings or emotions does this introduction of John’s Gospel bring to mind and why?

  • What are a few of the primary metaphors or symbols that John is using and what are they communicating?

  • Who are the different characters that are mentioned in this section and why do you think John is highlighting them?

  • Do you have any questions about portions of this text?


Getting to the Meaning: 

Let’s see if we can find out what the meaning is behind this section of verses:

  • Let’s return to the imagery John is using. What might be the meaning behind these symbols? How do they help us understand the main point of this passage?

  • Can you think of other places in scripture that might connect with this imagery?

  • If you could summarize this section in one short sentence, what would it be?


Applying the Bible to Our Lives: 

Let’s try to take the lessons in this text and make a plan to follow God’s teachings

  • Is there anything in this section that should change the way we think about God or strengthen the way we already think about God? If so, what is it, and how can we make that change?

  • John the Baptist is mentioned several times in this section and even quoted by John the Apostle. What kind of character do you see in John the Baptist? Do you think we often have the same attitude as John the Baptist? Is there something you can do this week to be a better witness for Christ?

  • The rejection of The Light, who is Christ, is a big emphasis in this text. Why do you think people reject The Light? What are some things we can do to ensure that we accept Jesus, and help others see Him for who He really is?
