Nathan O’Brien

Student Pastor

Nathan joined the staff at Canby Christian church in 2023 and now serves as our Student Pastor. He was born and raised in Northwest Indiana where he grew up in a Christian home. He attended church with his family his whole life, but it wasn't until the summer before his sophomore year in high school that he believed in Jesus. Though he always believed in God and, by all outward appearances, seemed to be a believer, his heart was sinful, and he cared a whole lot about what people thought of him. At a youth summer camp in 2009, he heard a speaker explain the passage Luke 9:23, "if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." It was after hearing this message that he realized a commitment to Christ is not something that should be taken lightly. It's a lifelong commitment. A life given to Jesus forever.

He was encouraged and called into the ministry in high school and attended Boyce Bible College. He received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. It was from here that he was called to a church in Northwest Indiana. He served as an Associate Pastor for six years and served as the leader of the student ministry. It was in this role that his love for the students and student ministry grew. He was saved because of the faithful preaching at a student ministry camp and understands that this is a special time in a person’s life. A time when teenagers are thinking about life, and how they fit in this world.

While in this role, he took the Chicago Course on Preaching through the Simeon Trust, and it was here that he grew in his love for teaching and reading the Bible. He has a passion for helping others read their Bibles well and making the Bible an engaging and interesting book to learn from.

Aside from spiritual passions. He loves to play his Nintendo Switch, especially with others. He has a big collection of board games and enjoys watching movies and TV shows.
